Lucky Reptile Rose of Jericho Live Plant

This incredible desert plant often is referred to as "Rose of Jericho". In its dried state it is already a great decoration of desert type terrariums. The showstopper however is, when it is getting wet. The twigs unfold and the whole plants opens up and looks green again. After drying-out it closes back to its original form, just to unfold again when water is coming into play.

A great effect in every terrarium!

ProRep Live Plant Chlorophytum comosum

Phrases like 'Terrascaping', 'Bio-Active' and 'Living Terrariums' are becoming more and more common in the world of reptile and amphibian care, as keepers become more aware of the benefits of creating a living ecosystem for their pets.

Apart from the aesthetic appeal of a planted terrarium there are some very real, tangible benefits for the animals. Living plants provide natural cover and climbing perches, shade, basking sites and maintain natural humidity. Just as live plants in an office can improve workers well-being, live plants in a terrarium will have the same effect for animals.

But not all plants are suitable for terrarium use and it is important to not only choose the correct plants for the environment but also to select species or varieties that do not grow too large. Many houseplants for sale appear suitable when they are small specimens in a garden centre, but given time they may end up as giants that overwhelm a terrarium.

ProRep are delighted to introduce a comprehensive range of live plants. These are not just small houseplants but are a selected range of species that are ideally suited to the terrarium, including some of the more unusual or rare types. They have carefully selected the range so that there are plants to suit all habitats and growth patterns. There are succulents for arid environments, bromeliads, ground cover plants and epiphytes for jungle setups as well as aquatic plants and mosses.

Whatever the environment you're trying to re-create, you will be able to use live plants to suit.

Chlorophytum comosum

Spider Plants form clumps of arching leaves and stolon's with baby plants on. They grow best in damp conditions and this is where the best shape and colour is achieved. Plants grown in conditions that frequently dry out will be pale in colour and often loose leaves. The do however quickly recover and are quite difficult to actually kill. Grown high up in the terrarium then this plant makes a great backdrop.

Epipremnum aureum

Devils Ivy will grow in a wide range of light and moisture conditions, but will not tolerate permanent dry conditions though. Without a doubt it does best in a moist, humid terrarium with good light. Under these conditions it can become a bit of a monster producing large leaves and overtaking a terrarium. However, the advantage of this plant, and particularly under ideal conditions, is that it can be pruned back hard and it will come back just as vigorous as before. It can be pruned back to within a few leaf nodes of the soil, or the vine trimmed back to the required position. If the main vine is left in place and just trimmed back to the same length all the time then it will get thicker and thicker creating a fantastic jungle effect.

Nerve Plants are used in damp terrariums where they will grow as a low creeping ground cover. They prefer low light conditions, and dislike bright, hot light. Most importantly the soil must be constantly and evenly moist and the humidity high, but with good airflow. Waterlogged or stagnant conditions will cause the plants to rot.

Stags Horn Ferns are unusual epiphytic ferns that grow on trees of rocks using modified leaves as an anchor. They like bright light, but not direct hot light from spot lamps which will dry the leaves and cause them to go brown. They must have high humidity and love frequent misting. They thrive in tanks that have automatic spray systems.

The Heartleaf Philodendron is another plant that takes on a new lease of life when grown in the terrarium. It loves high humidity and constantly, evenly damp soil with full light or shade. The only thing it doesnt like is low humidity and dry conditions, although even these it will tolerate. Under ideal conditions if grows at a vigorous climber with long thin stems, but prune it back, or pinch out the growing tip, and it will produce side shoots and become more compact.

The Mistletoe Cactus is a succulent, epiphytic cactus which tolerates a wide range of conditions. It needs a well drained soil and if this is constantly and evenly damp, without being too wet then it will thrive. If it does dry out however then the succulent leaves act as a water store and it will draw on this to survive until it is watered. It dislikes bright light and is best grown in a lightly shaded position. its ideal in a scrub or desert terrarium if potted so that it can be watered.

ProRep Live Plant Rose of Jericho

One of natures wonders, Rose of Jericho is a Selaginella species that is adapted to live in areas subject to extreme fluctuations in moisture. During dry periods the plant dries up and its leaves curl to form a round ball. It can remain like this for many years, seemingly dead. However, when the rains come the plant rapidly absorbs moisture and its brown leaves turn green and unfurl so it can resume active growth. It will remain like this until the dry season once again forces it into dormacy. In the terrarium it can be grown in damp (not wet) conditions with good light. It can also used in dry terrariums where it can tolerate drying out. Repeated rapid drying cycles will eventually kill the plant however.

ProRep Live Plant Bromeliad Various Sp.

Epiphytic bromeliads are suited for use in forest set ups. They can be grown attached to rocks or branches, or in a well drained soil. Planting these plants in waterlogged conditions will cause them to quickly rot as their roots are used for attachment rather than collecting water or nutrients. They are easily scorched by hot lights so be sure to plant them in a fairly bright position, but out of direct light. They will also tolerate shade. Most of the water and nutrients these plants require are absorbed by the leaves in the centre of the leaf whorl, where it forms a natural bowl. This central cup needs to be kept filled with water, which will happen naturally with spray systems. The occasional dead insect or frog dropping will decompose to provide nutrients, or you can use a weak foliar fertilizer. Occasionally the plant may flower after which it will produce young plants, called pups, at the base and then the parent plant will die.

ProRep Live Plant Ficus benjami, 30+cm tall

This plant will develop into a small tree given the right conditions. In the terrarium however it is used mainly in tall set ups for arboreal animals. It is especially useful for chameleons as the branches are nice and strong and so are suitable for them to climb on. Grow in good light, with moderate humidity and an evenly moist soil. low humidity and drought conditions will cause the leaves to drop and although they will grow back it makes the plant unattractive. These plants are grown on and are at least 30cm tall in a 14cm pot or larger. If you need a smaller plant then product code PPL218 may be more suitable.

Asplenium antiquum

Birds Nest Fern is an epiphyte which looks stunning when planted high up in the terrarium in a pocket of soil in rocks or a fork in a branch. It can also be tied to a branch with moss around its roots to hold soil. If planted in soil then it needs a rich soil which will hold moisture but does not waterlog. This fern dislikes hard water and alkaline conditions. Although it starts small it can eventually reach 30cm in height so be sure to allow plenty of growing space.

Chamaedorea elegans

The common Parlour Palm seems a strange choice for the terrarium as it can get very tall. As a small plant however it is ideal due to its tolerance of low light and a wide variety of moisture levels. Under low light conditions the plant will grow very slowly and does not really get much taller than when planted. With more light the fronds will get progressively taller and eventually it needs carefully trimming or moving to a new location. Although this palm grows from the base it should not be cut back to round level as this can kill it. Instead remove the dead outer fronds or remove very tall ones by cutting the stem. A large plant is ideal for chameleons as they can form thick clumps.

Cryptanthus Sp.

Earth Stars are a terrestrial bromeliad and are grown slightly differently from their epiphytic cousins. They prefer damp conditions and some shade and have extensive root systems that are used to absorb moisture and nutrients, unlike epiphytic species who's roots are mostly for attachment. They will grow in bright light but care must be taken not to scorch them with spot bulbs, etc. In bright light the colours are not so intense. They grow very low to the ground and are ideal in the foreground of a terrarium arrangement.

ProRep Live Plant Davalia Fern

Davalia Fern

The Rabbits Foot fern is so called because of its furry rhizomes that snake over the surface of the soil. In nature it grows as an epiphyte, with the rhizomes attaching it firmly to a rock or branch. In the terrarium it will need some support until the rhizomes have attached. If you want to grow this species terrestrially then provide a moist, rich soil that does not dry out. Rabbits Foot Ferns dislike bright light and are easily scorched so they must be positioned carefully to look their best.

Ficus pumila

Creeping Fig is the classic terrarium plant. It grown as a vigorous creeper with small attachment roots on the stems allowing it to fix to rocks and wood. If planted high up in the terrarium then it will trail down and can be used to form cascades of foliage. It prefers a moist soil and high humidity with good light. It will tolerate low light but this tends to make it grow very straggly and produce small leaves.

Ficus benjami

This plant will develop into a small tree given the right conditions. In the terrarium however it is used mainly in tall set ups for arboreal animals. It is especially useful for chameleons as the branches are nice and strong and so are suitable for them to climb on. Grow in good light, with moderate humidity and an evenly moist soil. low humidity and drought conditions will cause the leaves to drop and although they will grow back it makes the plant unattractive.

Guzmanias are epiphytic bromeliads suited to use in forest set ups. They can be grown attached to rocks or branches, or in a well drained soil. Planting these plants in waterlogged conditions will cause them to quickly rot as their roots are used for attachment rather than collecting water or nutrients. Guzmanias are easily scorched by hot lights so be sure to plant them in a fairly bright position, but out of direct light.
