Antenna Fern - Doryopteris cordata - 12cm Pot

The Antenna Fern has 2 distinct types of leaves. First low growing, lobed leaves form a tight clump before long arching feather leaves emerge above them. If you want to grow this species then provide a moist, rich soil that does not dry out. These ferns dislike bright hot light and are easily scorched so they must be positioned carefully to look their best.

Bird's Nest fern - Asplenium antiquum - 6cm Pot

Phrases like 'Terrascaping', 'Bio-Active' and 'Living Terrariums' are becoming more and more common in the world of reptile and amphibian care, as keepers become more aware of the benefits of creating a living ecosystem for their pets.

Apart from the aesthetic appeal of a planted terrarium there are some very real, tangible benefits for the animals. Living plants provide natural cover and climbing perches, shade, basking sites and maintain natural humidity. Just as live plants in an office can improve workers well-being, live plants in a terrarium will have the same effect for animals.

But not all plants are suitable for terrarium use and it is important to not only choose the correct plants for the environment but also to select species or varieties that do not grow too large. Many houseplants for sale appear suitable when they are small specimens in a garden centre, but given time they may end up as giants that overwhelm a terrarium.

ProRep are delighted to introduce a comprehensive range of live plants. These are not just small houseplants but are a selected range of species that are ideally suited to the terrarium, including some of the more unusual or rare types. They have carefully selected the range so that there are plants to suit all habitats and growth patterns. There are succulents for arid environments, bromeliads, ground cover plants and epiphytes for jungle setups as well as aquatic plants and mosses.

Whatever the environment you're trying to re-create, you will be able to use live plants to suit.

Asplenium antiquum

Birds Nest Fern is an epiphyte which looks stunning when planted high up in the terrarium in a pocket of soil in rocks or a fork in a branch. It can also be tied to a branch with moss around its roots to hold soil. If planted in soil then it needs a rich soil which will hold moisture but does not waterlog. This fern dislikes hard water and alkaline conditions. Although it starts small it can eventually reach 30cm in height so be sure to allow plenty of growing space.

Bromeliad - Nidularium sp. - 12cm Pot

Nidularia are epiphytic bromeliads suited to use in forest set ups. They can be grown attached to rocks or branches, or in a well drained soil. Planting these plants in waterlogged conditions will cause them to quickly rot as their roots are used for attachment rather than collecting water or nutrients. These plants prefer light shade and are easily scorched by hot lights so be sure to plant them in a fairly bright position, but with some shading from direct light. Most of the water and nutrients these plants require are absorbed by the leaves in the centre of the leaf whorl, where it forms a natural bowl. This central cup needs to be kept filled with water, which will happen naturally with spray systems. The occasional dead insect or frog dropping will decompose to provide nutrients, or you can use a weak foliar fertilizer. As the plant mature it will produce arching stolon's with a young plant at the end and they can form large attractive clumps over time. When supplied as 12cm pots then the plants will be larger with stolons and multiple off shoots.

Climbing Fig - Ficus pumila - 12cm Pot

Creeping Fig is the classic terrarium plant. It grown as a vigorous creeper with small attachment roots on the stems allowing it to fix to rocks and wood. If planted high up in the terrarium then it will trail down and can be used to form cascades of foliage. It prefers a moist soil and high humidity with good light. It will tolerate low light but this tends to make it grow very straggly and produce small leaves.

Epipremnum aureum

Devils Ivy will grow in a wide range of light and moisture conditions, but will not tolerate permanent dry conditions though. Without a doubt it does best in a moist, humid terrarium with good light. Under these conditions it can become a bit of a monster producing large leaves and overtaking a terrarium. However, the advantage of this plant, and particularly under ideal conditions, is that it can be pruned back hard and it will come back just as vigorous as before. It can be pruned back to within a few leaf nodes of the soil, or the vine trimmed back to the required position. If the main vine is left in place and just trimmed back to the same length all the time then it will get thicker and thicker creating a fantastic jungle effect.

Cryptanthus Sp.

Earth Stars are a terrestrial bromeliad and are grown slightly differently from their epiphytic cousins. They prefer damp conditions and some shade and have extensive root systems that are used to absorb moisture and nutrients, unlike epiphytic species who's roots are mostly for attachment. They will grow in bright light but care must be taken not to scorch them with spot bulbs, etc. In bright light the colours are not so intense. They grow very low to the ground and are ideal in the foreground of a terrarium arrangement.

Vriesea saundersii

Vrieseas are epiphytic bromeliads with an interesting leaf shape and pattern, ideally suited to use in forest set ups. They can be grown attached to rocks or branches, or in a well drained soil. Planting these plants in waterlogged conditions will cause them to quickly rot as their roots are used for attachment rather than collecting water or nutrients. Easily scorched by hot lights they need a fairly bright position, but out of direct light. They will also tolerate light shade. A mature plant will produce a stunning bright red flower stem (which is where they get their name "fire") after which it will produce young plants, called pups, at the base and then the parent plant will die.

Vriesea era

Vrieseas are epiphytic bromeliads with an interesting leaf shape and pattern, ideally suited to use in forest set ups. They can be grown attached to rocks or branches, or in a well drained soil. Planting these plants in waterlogged conditions will cause them to quickly rot as their roots are used for attachment rather than collecting water or nutrients. Easily scorched by hot lights they need a fairly bright position, but out of direct light. They will also tolerate light shade. A mature plant will produce a stunning bright red flower stem (which is where they get their name 'fire') after which it will produce young plants, called pups, at the base and then the parent plant will die.

Heart Fern - Hemionitis arifolia - 12cm Pot

Hemionitus arifolia

The Heart Fern is an unusual fern with glossy heart shaped leaves on long arching stems, which reach about 15cm in length. It is a plant for damp environments, preferring a well drained but evenly moist soil and shady conditions. It will grow as an epiphyte or terrestrially providing the conditions are suitable.

Philodendron scandens

The Heartleaf Philodendron is another plant that takes on a new lease of life when grown in the terrarium. It loves high humidity and constantly, evenly damp soil with full light or shade. The only thing it doesnt like is low humidity and dry conditions, although even these it will tolerate. Under ideal conditions if grows at a vigorous climber with long thin stems, but prune it back, or pinch out the growing tip, and it will produce side shoots and become more compact.

Microsorum diversifolium

The Kangaroo Paw Foot fern is so called because of its furry rhizomes that snake over the surface of the soil and hang down. In nature it grows as an epiphyte, with the rhizomes attaching it firmly to a rock or branch. In the terrarium it will need some support until the rhizomes have attached. If you want to grow this species terrestrially then provide a moist, rich soil that does not dry out but ensure the plant does not become waterlogged. Kangaroo Paw Ferns dislike bright light and are easily scorched so they must be positioned carefully to look their best.

Laceleaf - Anthurium sp. - 5.5cm Pot

The Flamingo Flower is a common houseplant, but in the terrarium it takes on a new lease of life. Thriving in warm, humid conditions in a evenly moist soil it forms clumps of upright leaves and is an ideal background plant. Because it will tolerate shade or bright light then it can be used in many positions, and its dark green glossy leaves work well when planted with other foliage plants.

Muehlenbeckia complexa

A delicate looking creeper the Maidenhair Vine has thin stems which snake over the ground and climb up walls and dcor. It can also be planted high in the terrarium so that it hangs down. It needs high humidity and constantly moist soil, but must not be waterlogged.

Soleirolia soleirolii

'Mind your own business' is a carpet forming plant that is ideally suited to the moist, forest type terrarium. Like the Spikemoss that it resembles it needs a moist, well drained soil with high humidity but it likes brighter conditions. These plants can only be used with small animals as their delicate nature means that they are easily damaged.
